Yoga & Flexibility

Flexibility is an important area that is all too often neglected. Flexibility can be defined as the ability to flex, extend or circumduct the body's joints through their extented range of motion without loss of strength. On the flip side, you can also bee too flexible; increasing the probability of muscle tears and pulls. Most people get stiffer with age as muscles and tendons tend to get shorter with disuse. The remedy for this stiffness is to be more active and use some of the techniques described below. This flexibility though cannot be achieved overnight, and takes time to achieve. So what can we do to achieve more flexibility and gain control over one's body? One possible answer is yoga.

The ancient Indian technique of Yoga is as much an art as exercise, and can be of great utility to many people. The philosophy of yoga, which comprises many forms, has been practised in the East for more than 3,000 years and in North America for almost 100 years. Yoga, a Sanskrit word for "union", means an experience of oneness or union with your inner self. This union forms with the the mind uniting with the body and soul to attain a higher level of conciousness. One type, known as hatha yoga, teaches posture and breathing exercises designed to stretch and strengthen the body, relieve stress, and improve balance. It emphasises the integration of the body, mind, and spirit; making yoga an excellent fitness activity by itself or as an adjunct to aerobic and strengthening exercises. Yoga can help achieve an additional component in flexibility and gaining better control of the body, by learning muscle control.

Although advanced yoga postures may appear impossible or dangerous to the novice observer, most beginner positions feel good and aren't very difficult to learn. The best way to learn yoga is from a qualified instructor; many health clubs, community centers, and private teachers are also available. Yoga books, manuals, and videos are widely available can be of great help. The only equipment neededis an exercise mat, towel or carpet and comfortable clothing. Non- binding, breathable clothes made of materials like cotton are recommended. Shoes are not required as the bare feet are best for keeping contact with the floor and maintaining balance.

The practice of yoga has seen an incredible rise in popularity in recent years as classes are packed, yoga studios are flourishing, hundreds of books and videos are available, and this ancient art continues to give people the tools to make their lives healthier and happier.
