Back Strains

Back muscle strain is a very common exercise related injury. It usually occurs from improperly lifting a weight - from the waist rather than with the legs. Improper weight training techniques are often the cause of back problems. Jerky motion and use of excessive weight being the most common culprits. Back strains cause the muscles of the back to go into a spasm, which causes more pain.

The best way to treat minor back strains is with rest. Lie on your side in a semi-fetal position with knees drawn up. Heat helps, especially the heat of a bath if the person can manage mobile enough. Lying on a hot pack is not recommended since it cuts down on circulation and can cause numbness.
