Hamstring pulls and injuries
Hamstring pulls are common injuries among fitness and sports enthusiasts. They are also stubborn injuries that must be treated fully before physical activity is resumed. Hamstrings are the large muscle at the back of the thigh and not as strong as the quads (front of the thigh) muscles, making them susceptible to strains and pulls.
Hamstring strains are deceptive, they hurt only after the muscle has cooled down and black or blue marks only appear days or weeks after the injury. Ice, rest, and a pressure wrap treatment are one recommended way to proceed. If the pain persists for more than a week, a doctor should be consulted since serious hamstring injuries can require surgery. Proper warm-up and stretching are the most effective ways to prevent hamstring pulls. Once a hamstring has fully healed, they should be strengthened and stretched carefully, if required under professional supervision.
