Protein Supplements


Of all the supplements available, one of the most sure-fire quality buys is protein powder. The importance of sufficient protein intake was discussed earlier. Protein supplements can be an invaluable part of getting in your daily protein, especially for busy people since they are a convenient way to meet nutritional needs.

They are more than tasty milkshakes - protein supplements are actually biologically superior to real food in many ways. There are three basic forms of protein supplements - intact proteins, hydrolysates and free form amino acids. Intact proteins are made of up polypeptides (long chains of amino acids). Hydrolysates are predigested proteins - partially put through an enzyme bath to allow for more rapid absorption. Free form aminos are individual amino acids.

Hydrolysates are the preferred type of protein. Their rapid absorption makes them an excellent choice for postworkout nutrition. Several studies have shown that hydrolysates (specifically, whey) are better retained by the body and have positive impacts on immune system function. Whey protein is also the highest biologically rated protein, the most effective in the body.
